After navigating a 14-year rocky road, the controversial Expropriation Bill has officially been approved.
The DA, EFF, IFP, FF Plus and ACDP have however objected to the bill.
"The 1975 Act is inconsistent with the Constitution in many respects, and the current bill proposes to bring the law in line with the Constitution," Patricia De Lille said.
The Bill allows nil compensation to be paid to landowners for property when expropriated under certain circumstances. Owners would have recourse to the courts if it does not agree with the price offered.
ANC MP Nolitha Ntobongwana said “This bill will allow government to address the land question and bring dignity to our people.”
DA MP Samantha Graham-Maré disagreed, saying it was “a lie” that the draft law would facilitate land reform.
“The Expropriation Bill before us … is not a tool for land reform, but rather a mechanism for punishing private property owners using arbitrary criteria that are [neither] easily measurable nor address historical spatial disadvantage.”
