The deaths and abuse suffered by thousands of mental patients from Life Esidimeni resulted in Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke to order in 2018 that families of the patients who died after being removed from Life Esidimeni are compensated. Some of these families are still yet to be paid.
